TWO Chubb Security female staff accosted by three males armed with a toy handgun and a hammer have been praised by police for their courage.
Brass BangleThe women arrived at the Chubb Security building on Austin St, Onekawa, Napier, about 5.40am yesterday, and were met by three masked men who had been waiting in an alley. The men were wearing dark clothing, including balaclavas, and were carrying weapons including a toy handgun and a hammer.
They grabbed the women, threatened them with violence using the gun and hammer, and demanded keys for the premises from one of the women. She refused and threw the keys into a rubbish skip. The men then stole handbags from the women before running away. Their handbags contained cellphones, bankcards, a cheque book, and other items.
Tiffany Flower RingPolice said they may have had a vehicle parked nearby, which would have left along Wakefield St.
"The victims showed great courage and initiative throughout the ordeal.
"They realised the handgun was a plastic toy and weren't prepared to concede to the demands of their attackers," Detective Sergeant Tim Smith said.
The attackers were of medium to solid build, and aged in their late teens or early 20s.
Soon after the robbery a red 1987 Holden Commodore GTS car was seen burning in nearby Puketapu Domain, about 15 kilometres from the robbery scene.
The car, registration UQ8328, was identified as having been stolen from Battery Rd, Napier on Sunday night.
"At this stage it hasn't been
embroidered patches positively linked to the robbery but the early morning timings are of interest to us," Mr Smith said.
Security footage shows several vehicles and cyclists going past on Austin St at the time of the attack and police would like to hear from anyone who saw the attack or the car.
