LONG BEACH - Shortly after taking office in 2002, Vice Mayor Val Lerch remembered how laughable it seemed to some that a new fire station would ever open in his 9th City Council District.
Breitling Replica Watches"And here we are eight years later, and we're actually going to have a groundbreaking ceremony on a fire station that is needed in the North tremendously," he said Monday.
City and fire officials on Saturday will break ground on the site of the future Fire Station 12, an approximately 10,000-square-foot fire station and 5,000-square-foot disaster resource building at 1199 Artesia Blvd.
The new modern station will be LEED-certified, built to better withstand earthquakes, more than double in size, have amenities that accommodate men and women and move in mass-casualty vehicles that help treat a large number of people in a disaster.
"We're going to be able to really anchor our service delivery there in Northtown regardless of natural or manmade disasters," said Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Reeb.
Reeb also said the new station, which he expects to be open for business in the spring of 2011, will allow Long Beach Fire to move the station from a residential street to a main Cartier Replica Watches thoroughfare and improve response times.
When completed, the firefighters and paramedic members of Station 12 will move from the more than 80-year-old station at 6509 Gundry Ave. to the 1.2-acre lot owned by the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency on Artesia.
Zenith Replica WatchesThe agency was supposed to vote on a contractor Monday but had to postpone it to March 15, to which Lerch joked.
"First of all, I gotta make sure you guys are going to vote yes for the 15th, or this ground-breaking ceremony will be for naught," he said.
He later thanked the agency board members for their support.
"Without you, without the community agreeing to help fund this, it would not have come to fruition," he said.
No word yet on what to do with the station on Gundry.
The event, which will include barbecue, refreshments and antique fire trucks, will begin at 10:30 a.m. at 1199 E. Artesia Blvd. E- mail for more information or to RSVP.
